INTERACTION BETWEEN WATER MOLECULE AND SALT

Water is the most abundant molecule in most cells, accounting for 60% to 90% of the mass of the cell. Water molecules are unusual because they can form four O-H-O aligned hydrogen bonds with up to four other water molecules when in solid phase (ice).

SELF REFLECTION ON INTRODUCTION TO BIOCHEMISTRY

Today, Dr Hashimatul Fatma Hashim have explain to us "what is biochemistry". Before that, we all know that biochemistry is very related to the reaction of living things. Through this course, we will know further and into details about the structure, organization and function of each biomolecules. Furthermore, biochemistry have been well known that it is usually used in medicine, agriculture and even in the heavy industry. For example, it is use in blood test, kidney function and pregnancy tests. It also used to enhance the growth of plants for farmers. On this learning session,we have learned that biochemistry can be divided into three areas study which is conformational, metabolism and informational. We also learned that the backbone of biomolecules are six non metallic elements which is carbon, hydrogen and phosphorus and sulfur. While hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen have less than 99% of atoms as it takes most of cells. Through this learning session, we have understand that there are two types of biomolecules which are biological macromolecule and biological micromolecule. We also learned about water. Water is a polar molecule as it has hydrogen bond among themselves. It also have hydrogen bond donor and hydrogen bond acceptor. We also concluded that ice is less dense that water, the melting ice will release some lattice and water move closer together. Thus, it will make liquid water more denser than solid. Water also can act as amphiphatic or amphiprotic, means that it can act as acid and base.

Based on the lecture, I have concluded that biochemistry is very common in our daily lives. From the production of medicine to the production of industrial and research material. Plus, the properties of water such as it is polar and a good solvent also has been explained in detail by the lecturer. There are three different classes of study in biochemistry which is conformational, metabolism and informational.Furthermore, Dr Hashimatul also questioned us by asking why ice can float on water since ice is a liquid and the properties of water do play an important role on why ice can floats. Water also can act as acid and base based on its amphiphatic and amphiprotic properties.
